INSTITUTIONAL SPACE
Year: 2020
Coalescing the institutions of the courthouse and group home, the spatial design interrogates the relationship between the institutions through juxtaposition and symbolic expression of the tension often experienced between the two. Ideas of exposure, insertion, and surveillance govern the spatial material qualities of the design. Monumental forms and weighty materialities are contrasted with calculated levels of transparency of slippages of space. Visual connections through apertures that generate exposure and the physical, spatial impressions of one upon the other, interrogates the invisible connection between the institutions. The disconnect of these institutions to wider societies is also acknowledged as the project, on the whole, aims to reconnect the site to the city through connection and activation of space.
